FORDYCE, Ark. – Six hundred meals were prepared Friday, Feb. 10, by Arkansas Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers at First Baptist Church in Fordyce and served to residents of the south Arkansas town.
Residents pulled up in their cars and trucks, sometimes pulling trailers, to pick up the meals in a drive-thru fashion. Disaster Relief volunteers greeted the people with a smile and handed them however many bags of food they needed.
Greeting almost every resident by name was Surrender Church Pastor Roderick Rogers of Fordyce.
Disaster Relief teams were deployed to Fordyce and other towns throughout south Arkansas following the ice storm that froze parts of the state the first week of February and left many without power.
In Fordyce, First Baptist Church Minister of Music Gary Powell said the whole city was left without power.
“We have members that are 8-10 miles out and everyone was out of power unless they had a generator. That started Wednesday night (Feb. 1),” Powell said.
Along with feeding units, he said Disaster Relief deployed chainsaw units, shower/laundry units and more to the impacted areas. Powell said they had different crews rolling in all week.
“I know our folks have been very appreciative,” he said, touting the way the Disaster Relief volunteers carry themselves. “It’s a great ministry. They look for opportunities. These are Godly people. It’s been a joy to have them here. It’s been a blessing.”
Arkansas Baptist Disaster Relief teams were deployed for a total of eight days following the ice storm. Teams deployed were Red River Baptist Association Feeding Unit, Faulkner Baptist Association Chainsaw Unit, Balboa Baptist Church Chainsaw Unit, First Baptist Church in Russellville Chainsaw Unit and Geyer Springs Shower and Laundry Unit.
