A partnership for the future

The gathering in Manly Chapel on February 17 carried a sense of purpose.

Leaders from Williams Baptist University and Black River Technical College stood together before faculty and students as well as political and community leaders to commemorate a new partnership between the two northeast Arkansas institutions. While the agreement formalizes cooperation between the schools, those present understood the moment represented something more.

It was a shared commitment to the future of Arkansas—and to the role that work and education will play in that future.

For Williams Baptist University, the partnership also reflects a conviction deeply rooted in Scripture and in its Baptist heritage: that work is not merely a means of earning a living, but a good gift from God and an essential part of human flourishing.

Work as God’s Design

Christians often think of work primarily as necessity. But the Bible presents a richer vision.

Before sin entered the world, God placed Adam in the garden “to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). Work was not part of the curse; it was part of creation itself. Human beings were designed to cultivate, build, steward, and serve.

Through our work, we reflect the creativity and care of our Creator – a way to serve God and our neighbor. That insight speaks directly to our own moment.

Arkansas’s Opportunity

Arkansas is a state rich in faith, family, and community. At the same time, we face real challenges—workforce shortages, economic pressures, and educational gaps that impact families across our region.

Moving forward will require more than programs or policies. It will require people—men and women equipped with the faith, calling, skills, and character to help our state move forward, and that path forward is through meaningful work.

That conviction stands behind the partnership between Williams Baptist University and Black River Technical College.

A Strategic Partnership

Black River Technical College has long served northeast Arkansas through strong technical education and workforce training. Williams Baptist University has served the region for generations through Christ-centered higher education that develops students intellectually, spiritually, and vocationally.

By aligning their strengths, the two institutions are creating new pathways for Arkansas students.

This partnership allows students to move from technical training at BRTC into bachelor’s degree programs at Williams while building stackable and transferable credentials. Students can gain practical, hands-on skills while continuing their academic progress.

Each institution brings distinct strengths. BRTC provides applied training and workforce certifications. Williams contributes academic programs, leadership development, and a Christ-centered spiritual formation.

Together, these strengths create opportunities neither institution could provide alone.

A New Approach to Workforce Education

One of the first initiatives from this partnership is a collaborative agribusiness workforce pathway.

Recently, the Higher Learning Commission approved Williams Baptist University to offer an innovative 90-hour Bachelor of Science degree in Agribusiness. This streamlined degree allows students to complete a bachelor’s program more efficiently while maintaining strong academic and workforce preparation.

Students will gain both classroom instruction and hands-on experience through Williams’ agricultural programs, including Eagle Farms.

Agriculture remains one of Arkansas’s most vital industries. Preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders is both an economic necessity and a stewardship responsibility.

The partnership with BRTC will help expand those opportunities. And leaders from both institutions anticipate future collaboration in areas such as allied health, business, and technology—fields where workforce needs continue to grow.

Work and Christian Education

For Williams Baptist University, this partnership reflects its broader mission.

For more than eighty years, Arkansas Baptists have supported Williams because they believed Christian education should prepare students for lives of faithful service—not only in ministry, but in every vocation.

Farmers, teachers, nurses, technicians, pastors, and business leaders all serve the Lord through their work.

Williams has renewed its focus on this biblical understanding through initiatives such as Williams Works, a work-based educational model that integrates meaningful employment with academic study. Students gain practical experience, develop discipline and responsibility, and often graduate with little or no student debt.

The partnership with Black River Technical College extends that same vision—broadening access to education and strengthening workforce preparation for students across the region.

A Legacy and a Future

This commitment to work-centered education is not new.

Since our founding in 1941, Williams Baptist University has sought to cultivate leaders who serve Christ in the church and in the marketplace. Arkansas Baptists established the university with the conviction that education should shape the whole person—head, heart, and hand.

Today, that mission continues with renewed clarity. Work is not simply preparation for life; it is part of God’s calling on life.

The new partnership with Black River Technical College reflects the cooperative spirit that has long defined Baptist life in Arkansas—churches, institutions, and individuals working together for a shared mission.

Looking Ahead

No single initiative will solve every challenge facing our state. But faithful progress often begins with intentional steps.

This partnership represents one of those steps. It creates new educational pathways, strengthens workforce preparation, and expands opportunity for Arkansas students and families.

More importantly, it reflects a vision grounded in Scripture—that people flourish when they are equipped to use their gifts in meaningful work that serves others and honors God.

For Arkansas Baptists, that vision has always been central to the mission of Williams Baptist University.

And through partnerships like this one, that mission continues—preparing the next generation of Christ-centered leaders who will make a difference through their life work.
