Job Description

Principal Function:

The Pastor is responsible to the church to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, to teach the biblical revelation, to engage in pastoral care ministries, to provide administrative leadership in all areas of church life, and to act as the chief administrator of the paid staff.

Responsibilities:

  1. Plan and conduct the worship services; prepare and deliver sermons; lead in observance of ordinances.
  2. Lead the Church in an effective program (ministry) of witnessing and in a caring ministry for persons in the church and community.
  3. Visit active and inactive members and prospects on as need basis.
  4. Conduct counseling sessions; perform wedding ceremonies; conduct funerals at Pastor’s discretion.
  5. Work with Deacons, church officers, and committees as they perform their assigned responsibilities; train and lead the Deacons in a program of family ministries.
  6. Act as moderator of church business meetings, unless the Church has elected a moderator.
  7. Cooperate with associational, state, and denominational leaders in matters of mutual interest and concern; keep the Church informed of denominational development; represent the Church in civic matters.
  8. Serve as chief administrator of the paid church staff; supervise the work of assigned paid staff workers.

Relationships

The Pastor shall:

  1. Be an employee of Newton County Baptist Church.
  2. Be the supervisor of Ministerial Staff Members.
  3. Continue in office until terminated at his request or the request of the church.
  4. Be a non-voting (ex-officio) member of the Deacon Body and all committees. Attendance of committee meeting will be at his discretion.

Considerations

The Church shall:

  1. Pay an annual salary and allowances as provided for in the Church budget.

Preaching Ministry Specifics

  1. Be responsible for the pulpit ministry of the Church by filling the pulpit for all regular and special services.
  2. In his absence from the pulpit, secure a guest speaker. In case of an emergency, Deacons will assume responsibility.

Pastoral Ministry Specifics

  1. As under shepherd, have oversight of the Church and seek to know the people and their needs.
  2. Seek to meet the needs of the Church and to motivate its members to become encouragers and helpers to each other.
  3. Lead in the development of programs (ministries) that equip the Church body for the work of the ministry, and for the edifying of the body of Christ.
  4. Seek out and act upon opportunities that will result in improving personal skills related to the Pastoral Ministry at Newton County Baptist Church.
  5. Make hospital visits and coordinate visits by other Ministerial Staff Members. A special effort should be made to be with church members or their immediate family when they are having major surgery.

Administrative Specifics

  1. The Pastor, as the Chief Administrative Officer is responsible to undertake/oversee all administrative duties of the Church and will preside at all business meetings and be moderator of all Church business (see responsibilities #7 under job description).
  2. The pastor will work with the church as a whole to assign responsibilities to the staff and other workers of the Church in order to fulfill the needs, goals, and objectives of the Church.
