ABDR responds to power outage in McCrory

Arkansas Baptist Disaster Relief (ABDR) volunteers quickly responded to provide aid in McCrory on Monday, June 16, after a widespread outage left many in the area without electricity.

According to a June 17 article by the Wynne Progress, the outage among Entergy Arkansas customers on Sunday occurred due to a self-contained fire within its McCrory substation. It affected over 1,000 residents in Patterson and parts of McCrory in Woodruff County.

ABDR sent its 100kw generator and set up at First Baptist Church in McCrory. Thanks to the generator, they had electricity at the church by 2:30 p.m. Monday. The church’s family life center served as a cooling center and shelter for residents in need.

According to the Wynne Progress article, Entergy estimated 75% of its customers affected by the outage should have power restored today, June 17, with the rest by noon tomorrow.

Among the ABDR volunteers who quickly responded on Monday was Bobby Smith, a retired electrician, of Corners Chapel Baptist Church. ABDR Director Randy Garrett said Smith was in the middle of a project at his church but dropped everything to lend a hand. That’s just one example of the dedication of disaster relief volunteers, who serve as the hands and feet of Jesus wherever they go.

“Disaster Relief is always available and ready to help anytime, no matter what the needs are. Sometimes it’s a tornado, sometimes it’s a hurricane, and sometimes it’s people that need power. Whatever resources we’ve got, we make it available to the public through our churches,” Garrett said.
