LITTLE ROCK – Aubrey Lee, an 11th grader from Grandview Baptist Church in Berryville, has been involved with Bible Drill for nine years.
Bible Drill is a discipleship tool for teaching children and youth God’s Word. Children and students can develop strong Scripture memory skills while learning the books of the Bible and key biblical passages.

“I enjoy learning all the verses. It’s cool whenever I am sitting in a sermon or doing a Bible study looking at a verse and being like, ‘Oh, I know that. I’ve memorized it before,’” Lee said, noting Bible Drill also provides opportunities to meet new people and see new places.
Lee was one of several students gathered Saturday, April 12, at Calvary Baptist Church in Little Rock to compete at the State Bible Drill competition.
The annual event is the culmination of months of memorization and practice calls by the students and their leaders. The competition involves knowing where to find specific Scripture passages based on a one-word descriptor and quoting multiple verses.
Lee placed first in the high school competition. Noah Darnell, a 10th grader from First Baptist Church in Pea Ridge, took second place.
Darnell has participated in Bible Drill for eight years. Darnell said he enjoys the learning aspect of Bible Drill as well as the friendly competition, especially against his cousin who sometimes competes with him. The Bible Drill program is designed to allow children and youth to enjoy learning the Bible during low-pressure competition.
In the youth division, placing first was Cooper Overly, an 8th grade student from First Baptist Church in Hot Springs. Second place went to Julia Lentz, a 9th grader from Rudd Baptist Church in Green Forest.
“It’s always an encouragement seeing the next generation passionate about learning God’s Word. To me every child and youth that participates in Bible Drill is a winner, because they are learning Scripture and hopefully applying it to their life. What they are hiding in their heart will surpass any certificate or award recognition,” State Bible Drill Coordinator Emily Smith said.
