[Church Business Spotlight] Navigating the financial season: reflect, evaluate, and plan for future

Patrick Henry, Treasurer/CFO, Arkansas Baptist State Convention

As we begin the third month of the year, church leaders find themselves in a unique financial season. This is a time of both reflection and forward planning. The previous year has closed, and the final numbers are in. Whether the church finished with a surplus or faced financial challenges, now is the time to evaluate where things stand. If an audit is part of the financial process, preparations could be well underway. Ensuring financial records are accurate, reconciling accounts, and gathering necessary documentation will make the process smoother and provide valuable insights into the church’s financial health.

With nearly a quarter of the current year complete, churches should have a reasonable understanding of how this year is shaping up. Tithes, offerings, and other revenue streams should be reviewed to determine whether they align with expectations. If giving trends are lower than anticipated, it may be time to determine whether adjustments need to be made. Are certain ministries or programs operating above budget? Are expenses tracking higher than projected? Conversely, if revenue is strong, churches should consider outreach programs or possibly debt reduction. Regular financial check-ins allow leaders to make informed decisions rather than waiting until the year-end review.

At the same time, financial leaders must begin looking ahead to next year. The building blocks for the next budget are already taking shape based on current trends, anticipated changes, and long-term ministry goals. Are there major projects or facility needs that should be factored in? Are staffing adjustments needed? Will the economy have an impact on giving patterns? By proactively addressing these questions, churches can build a budget that is both realistic and mission driven.

The financial season is about balance. Church leadership should learn from the past, review the present, and strategically plan for the future. A church that regularly evaluates its financial standing and makes timely adjustments will be positioned for long-term sustainability. Strong financial stewardship today ensures that the church can continue fulfilling its mission in the years to come.
