[Perspective] Gratitude

Chairman, ABSC Executive Board

I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the work of Dr. Rex Horne. Serving in the role of Chair of the Executive Board for the Arkansas Baptist State Convention has given me the chance to work with Dr. Horne in numerous situations. I have known him in many other roles through the years as a pastor, university president, and Foundation Ambassador. Being a younger pastor, I have always admired his ability to lead others with respect and compassion yet directing with confidence and integrity. In the current circumstances of my life, I have grown to appreciate the friendship that has developed over the years.

When I heard the announcement of his transition in a recent meeting I was saddened by the news. Although this action was always on the horizon, it startled me. Not because I was shocked but because of the change it was bringing to the future. Change is never easy, but it is necessary. That is something he said many times in various forms. I can always say I will accept his decisions with confidence and trust because I learned his choice comes with much prayer and thought. So, I am grateful for the opportunities to collaborate with a man of faith, compassion, integrity, and vision.

Gratitude can be described as the state of being thankful and appreciative for something in your life. It is not only a spontaneous feeling but also a practice that can significantly enhance your well-being. Research shows that practicing gratitude can lead to improved mental health, increased happiness, and stronger relationships. Additionally, grateful individuals tend to be more helpful and compassionate, contributing positively to their communities.

I feel this gratitude can make me a better person. Not only does it feel good to surround yourself with people who appreciate you or approve of your work, but it can also build confidence in yourself. I am sure you can think of many people who have helped you grow and become better. The ones who you are grateful for. These people are the ones that are loyal and trustworthy. The individuals that create trust and develop confidence and empowerment. You may know someone who is dependable and cooperative to your goals and vision. These individuals have a positive impact on your ability to do things in your life. Gratitude makes us better people. We tend to be more harmonious and relatable. It makes life easier to navigate when this is your state of mind. We all need to be grateful for these folks. Everyone needs to experience gratitude.

As I write this article, I reflect on the times I have been encouraged to keep working toward the finish line. I remember that I have been challenged to think clearly and make good decisions for the greater cause of the Kingdom. My heart is filled with memories of people who, like Dr. Horne, have influenced me and helped me grow. I think of my spiritual legacy of individuals that took time to show me through example and lead me to choose the right decisions in life. These are the people that I am grateful for. The ones that made me a better person.

So, thank you Dr. Horne, for being who you are and leading as our Executive Director. Thank you for making the Arkansas Baptist State Convention better. Thank you for helping me grow and being a friend to us all.

We are grateful!
