Pastors in America are getting older. The median age of pastors in America increased from 45 to 55 from 1992 to 2017. Fewer young people are entering vocational ministry, and the result is a shrinking, aging population of senior pastors.
Arkansas Baptists believe that God is still in the business of calling students to ministry. But just as a person cannot respond to the gospel apart from having an opportunity to hear it and respond to it, young believers need to hear about the call to vocational ministry and have an opportunity to respond to it in obedience. Churches need to actively extend invitations to gospel ministry.
In an effort to help churches in this task, Williams Baptist University and the Arkansas Baptist State Convention are hosting Camp Kaleo this June. Camp Kaleo seeks to serve 16-20-year-olds who are wrestling with a call to ministry.
The three-day camp will feature preaching, teaching, and breakout sessions expressly focused on various vocational calls to ministry: pastoral ministry, student ministry, music ministry, and women’s ministry. The keynote speaker of our inaugural camp is Dr. Scott Pace, co-author of Calling Out the Called: Discipling Those Called to Ministry Leadership.
